EV Fire Training

Birmingham Fire & Rescue is always training to exceed expectations, the exemplification of “Excellence Through Service”. As the new challenge of electric vehicle fires and lithium ion batteries continue to climb globally, Birmingham Fire & Rescue meets that challenge head on through re- search, study, training and preparedness. This week, we held a 2 day live fire training and demo event with the tool that is being effectively used in Eu- rope to mitigate these battery incidents. We thank the team from Cobra ColdCut for making the trip from Sweden to deliver training and an alternative method to address these increasing incidents here in the United States. We would also like to thank Barber Motorsports Park for their generosity as host and support on day 1. Special thanks to Weil Wrecker Service for all of the logis- tical support and hosting the day 2 demo at their facility. This extremely rare training opportunity would not have been possible without your partnership and the generous donation by an anonymous donor of an Electric vehicle to train on. We thank you!
Training is KEY… Congratulations to all of these Volunteers and their departments!
Today we (Loxley Fire Department) ended our Certified Volunteer Firefighter course, commonly called the 160. We had firefighters from Loxley, Belforest, Elsanor, Gateswood, Spanish Fort, Crossroads, Fairhope, Barnwell, and Summerdale. These men and women set out on a mission in August of 2024, to become certified firefighters. They endured months of strenuous mental and physical training, classroom sessions and hands on training events to earn their certification. Today they tested out on HazMat Awareness and Operations. They will soon find out if they passed, and if they can call themselves certified firefighters. Speaking for the instructors, each and every student who enrolled and continuously came to training, came to class, worked hard and studied, we already see you as firefighters. You earned it, be proud of yourselves because we are. Thank you to our evaluators who took time out of their schedule and away from their families to come and make sure the students performed to standard. For the chiefs who sent their people to us, thank you for trusting Loxley to train your people. To the students, cherish the friendships you made in this class. You will be family forever.
